Our Institute was formed in 1921 and currently has forty+ members
As WI members we are of course part of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes and issues which affect women both in the UK and abroad are brought to our attention through the NFWI, particularly through the eight issues of the WI magazine, WI Life which every member receives.
The County Federation organises events throughout Staffordshire, including music, craft and cookery days and there is a very popular annual General Knowledge Quiz in which about ninety teams participate. Denstone representatives were the proud winners of the competition in 2010, joint winners in 2016 and winners again in 2021.
At Denstone, we are part of the Two Rivers Group, namely, Denstone and Alton WIs, and, we all meet for an annual social evening to which a guest speaker is invited. Then at Christmas we share a Carol Service together.
Within our own WI, we offer much more than the monthly meetings. We organise trips, an annual Birthday Lunch, a sports evening and a Bluebell Walk and lunch at Marsh Farm has become a regular event in Spring. We have a most talented Craft Group who usually meet once a month, and, at Pantomime Time, they meet weekly producing an astonishing array of props and costumes. Our latest group is the Activities Group who have started to meet regularly to play table tennis, go ten pin bowling and play darts. We also have regular evening walks led by members of the group. These take place throughout the summer and finish at a member’s house for well-earned eats and drinks. Then for the very bold, there is a walk organised early in the New Year. Each Christmas there is a collection of gifts and toiletries for a local women’s refuge. Through our fundraising we also contribute to local charities and projects, the most recent being for the village hall cladding.
The Women’s Institute is non-political and offers friendship and a warm welcome to all ages and creeds. Please do get in touch with us and perhaps attend a few meetings to see if you might be interested in joining our happy band. It would be difficult to meet a friendlier group of women!
