This month our members tried the Tumbling Blocks pattern with ribbon weaving. Amazing how differently they all turned out.

Our recent speaker was Dr. Louise Edwards who was talking to us about her recent expedition to Northern Norway. She was part of a "Sea Women Expedition" studying firsthand the effects of changing climate and human behaviour on the orca of the North Atlantic. Nothing unusual about this you may say but this talk was delivered live, via Zoom, from Canmore, a small town in the Canadian Rockies, to a packed audience of W. I. members in Denstone village hall. Louise is the daughter of one of our members and with the combined technological input of several Edwards family members here in the UK. the trans - Atlantic link up went without a hitch.
As well as Louise's role as a geoscientist, she was also the immersive learning specialist. With her skills as VR ( Virtual Reality) programmer, she was hoping to share some of the fantastic experiences she had on the expedition. when wearing a virtual reality headset, the users feel they are immersed in their surroundings. Louise, together with two friends has developed a VR game, ( Found in the Fjords - An Arctic Ocean Experience ) While playing the game you can become a young orca swimming in the Arctic fjords learning how to feed and survive or you can be a tourist visiting the area. It is totally immersive so you can actually experience the sights and sounds of swimming with orcas! You can be an orca! On Saturday the 13th of January, Denstone W.I . were blessed with a glorious day for their New Year walk.
The sun shone from a cloudless blue sky as we walked through Dimmingsdale to Oakamoor, the scenery was wonderful, from high above the valley we could see for miles, a forest of trees, huge sandstone rocks and in the distance the hills that surround Oakamoor. At Oakamoor we were met by a WI member and her husband bringing our lunch and hot mulled wine. We then walked back along the old railway line to the car park at Dimmingsdale from where we drove to the home of Wendy and Richard Forrester where we enjoyed warm mince pies, Christmas cake and a cup of tea. Sixteen people took part in the walk and more WI members met us for the refreshments when we arrived back in Denstone. A truly wonderful start to 2024. A glorious evening at Wootton Cricket Club. We played golf, croquet and smite and enjoyed a chat in glorious surroundings. The evening concluded with lovely refreshments. Thanks to the organisers.
We had a very creative two hours making a trinket tray led by Sue. it was lovely to see how everybody's design differed from one basic template.
We are already planning our next craft meet up. Lovely views on the annual bluebell walk around Blithfield Reservoir. Afterwards, members and friends enjoyed Sunday lunch at Marsh Farm, Abbots Bromley.
On Monday the 20th of March Denstone W.I enjoyed an interactive evening of drawing with pen and ink. Our speaker for the evening was Kate Dawes who showed us different techniques of drawing, bold, loose and scribble! We marvelled at Kate's beautiful floral art, she creates amazing botanical art with both photography and pen, sometimes with a hybrid of both. Kate had brought leaves and flowers and we then tried our hand at capturing their images on paper, some of us with more success than others!
We were also very happy to learn that Win Ferneyhough had won the Staffs W.I. federation cup for ladies singles bowling. |
