With temperatures dropping below zero, Denstone Village Hall provided a warm and cheerful welcome to the WI members, who, true to form, had arrived dressed in their best Christmas bling ready for the Christmas party. Everybody had brought something to contribute whether it was mulled wine, mince pies, shortbread, party games, quizzes or just a good sense of humour. Besides all this, in true Christmas spirit, members, as agreed, had also brought with them generous donations of toiletries to be given to the Cheadle Women’s Refuge.
The evening began with three separate quizzes, all much enjoyed. One, particularly, took us down memory lane as we had to remember the brand of chocolates from their advertising strap lines. This caused much scratching of heads and discussion. As the answers were read out it was very funny hearing everybody chanting the jingles together. A geographical quiz followed and then we had to guess 30 celebrities behind their father Christmas masks. After all this cerebral activity we had a break with warm mulled wine, hot mince pies and short bread. It was a chance to walk round the room, socialise and get to grips with another competition, this time involving about 30 photographs of places in Denstone which we had to recognise and name.
A further game called ‘Racing Categories’ followed which was hotly contested. Never let it be said that the Denstone WI members are not competitive! After this, the lights were dimmed and the evening closed with some quiet but tuneful singing of carols. We all agreed that it had been an excellent evening’s entertainment
